Common questions

How do you say thank you in Thai?

Thank you in Thai is "ขอบคุณ" (khop khun). To be polite, a man adds "khrap" and a woman adds "kha" at the end, so "khop khun khrap" or "khop khun kha".

How do you say hello in Thai?

Hello in Thai is "สวัสดี" (sawasdee). As with thank you, a man says "sawasdee khrap" and a woman says "sawasdee kha", together with the traditional wai gesture.

Do you need to speak Thai to travel in Thailand?

Not at all. In the big cities and tourist spots there is English signage and plenty of people happy to help. But a few Thai words, especially "thank you", "hello" and "no worries", open doors and are warmly received. This phrasebook gives you the basics, with a simple romanization for pronunciation.
